More Than Child's Play: Prepping Your Kid's Party for Adult Guests

Sometimes, the only thing more stressful than worrying about entertaining a group of kids is entertaining a group of adults (especially if you don’t know them all that well). Although we specialize in everything “kid fun”, trust us, we can spot a bored parent from a mile away. Whether they’re face down on their phones or awkwardly hovering around the punch bowl, it’s a tough sight to see.

If you’ve got younger kids, it’s totally normal for parents to stay on-site throughout the duration of your party. But fear not! We’re here to drop gems on how to keep the grown-ups as engaged and entertained as possible.

Create a Parent Pit Stop

First things first, designate a cozy corner just for the adults. Think comfy, size-appropriate seating options arranged for conversation. Just far enough away from the chaos, but close enough so they can keep an eye on the kids. OR you can have music playing or a nostalgic TV show on to cut the tension.

Grown-Up Eats

Leave the candy and juice boxes to the little ones and treat the parents to more elevated options that won’t cause indigestion. Some of our faves include:

  • Sandwich platter (you can order these ahead of time for a reasonable price at Metro or Vons Grocery Stores)

  • Water bottles/carbonated water

  • Coffee/tea (a Keurig/Nespresso and some pods go a long way)

  • Croissants and bakery cookies

  • Fruit/veggie/cheese platter & dip (available at Metro and Vons)

Adult Activities

If you’re up to it, prepare adult-friendly, low investment (yet fun) games. Playing cards, conversation starter cards, adult colouring sheets, wine glass painting, or even an old school video game console (for nostalgia purposes).

Invite Your Extrovert Friend(s)!

We all have that friend who is a whiz at working a room and breaking the ice with ANYONE. Entice them with a slice of birthday cake (and maybe even an adult drink 😉) in exchange for their energy!

Sure, kids are the first priority but knowing that parents have something to do will put your mind at ease. Final thoughts:

  • Don’t sweat the small stuff

  • Less can be more

  • The party will be over faster than you think!

  • Don't be awkward. Don't be awkward. Don't be awkward (lol).
