Halloween at Home: 3 Kids Halloween Party Ideas for Toronto Families
A couple of years ago we shared some fun trick-or-treating alternatives. This year, we're taking it one step further. Maybe your street doesn't get many trick-or-treaters. Maybe you live in a condo where knocking on doors isn't really a thing. Or maybe you'd just rather keep Halloween close to home with the people you love.

Whatever the reason, hosting Halloween at home can be just as fun (if not more). And with Halloween landing on a Saturday this year, it's the perfect time to plan something special.
Here are three ways to do it, from a full house party to a cozy night in.
Option 1: The Classic Halloween House Party
Best for: neighbours, friends, family, and a houseful of kids in costume
This is the big one. Doors open, costumes on, music going, and kids running from room to room. Here's how to pull it off without losing your mind.
Set Up a Spooky Snack Table
Keep it simple and grab-and-go so kids can snack between activities:
Popcorn in mini paper bags
"Mummy" hot dogs (pigs in a blanket with ketchup eyes)
Orange and purple candy in jars
Fruit cups or clementines with jack-o'-lantern faces drawn on
Juice boxes and water
Pro tip: keep the snack table away from your activity stations. Sticky fingers and slime don't mix.
Keep Kids Busy with Activity Stations
Kids are buzzing on Halloween. Having a few stations set up gives that energy somewhere to go, and gives the adults a chance to actually enjoy the party.
Here's what works best for a Halloween house party:
Glitter Tattoo Station
Kids are already showing up in full costume (and some with makeup), so this is the night where glitter tattoos really shine. Kids can pick a spooky design like a bat, spider, pumpkin or ghost, and get it on the arm or hand in about 2 minutes. They're fast, sparkly, and won't mess up anyone's costume.
Slime Station
Spider slime, anyone? Kids pick their colours, add Halloween mix-ins, and take their slime home at the end. It's an activity and a party favour in one. (For kids under 6, we ask for one adult per child at the slime table.)
LEGO Building Area
A LEGO zone gives kids a calmer spot to build, create, and take a break from the chaos. It's a great option for kids who need a little downtime.
You can book any one of these, or mix them to give kids a few places to go. Want to make it easy? We bring everything, set it up, run it, and clean it up. You just enjoy the party.
Make a Playlist That Hits
Put together a Halloween playlist with a mix of spooky classics and current kids' favourites. Keep it upbeat while kids are arriving and doing activities, then turn it up for a costume dance party.
Add a Costume Parade
Have kids walk a "runway" through the living room to show off their costumes. Give out silly awards like Spookiest, Funniest, Most Creative, and Best Family Costume. Kids love it, and it makes for great photos.
Option 2: The Cozy Halloween Movie Night
Best for: cousins, close friends, or a few neighbourhood kids
Not every Halloween needs to be a big production. A movie night is low-key, budget-friendly, and honestly one of our favourite ways to celebrate.
Create a Home Theatre
Clear a wall and project the movie onto it with a mini projector (or use the biggest TV in the house)
Dim the lights and add some orange string lights or battery candles for ambience
Pick a not-too-scary Halloween movie that suits the youngest kid in the room
Go Sleepover Style
This is where the magic happens. Push the couches back and turn the floor into one giant cozy zone:
Blankets, pillows, and sleeping bags everywhere
Here's our favourite trick: bring the mattresses out from the bedrooms and lay them on the floor. Kids get a soft spot to sprawl out on, and it instantly feels like an event.
Hand out glow sticks before the lights go down
Build a Movie Snack Bar (Dollarama Run Approved)
You don't need to spend a lot. A quick trip to the dollar store covers it:
Popcorn in paper bags or Halloween buckets
Movie theatre candy boxes
Chips, pretzels, and a few treats from the trick-or-treat stash
Juice boxes or a hot chocolate station
Pro tip: start with a short activity before the movie, like a quick craft for each kid, so they're ready to settle in by showtime.
Option 3: The Halloween Block Party
Best for: neighbourhoods with lots of kids
We work a lot of block parties in the summer, and there's no reason the fun has to stop in the fall. A Halloween block party brings the whole street together and gives kids a safe, festive place to show off their costumes. (New to block parties? Our block party planning guide covers the basics.)
Plan Around the Weather
Toronto at the end of October can be chilly, especially once the sun goes down. A few things to keep in mind:
Keep the outdoor part short. Plan for about an hour outside, like a costume parade down the street or a candy walk between decorated porches.
Start early. Late afternoon is warmer and brighter than evening.
Have a warm home base. A garage, porch, or one neighbour's house where families can warm up, grab a hot chocolate, and do activities.
Remind families to dress warm. Costumes over snowsuits are a Canadian Halloween tradition for a reason. 😅
Other Block Party Ideas
A porch decorating contest
A "trunk or treat" style candy table at a few houses
A hot chocolate and apple cider stand
A group photo of the whole street in costume
Quick Tips for Any Halloween Party at Home
Ask about allergies on the invite. Have a few non-candy treats on hand (stickers, glow sticks, mini toys) for kids with food allergies.
Give every kid a treat bag. Even without trick-or-treating, kids love going home with a haul.
Plan for younger kids. Keep decorations and movies more silly than scary, and have a quiet corner for little ones who need a break.
Book entertainment early. Halloween weekend is one of our busiest weekends of the fall, and this year it falls on a Saturday.
Don't forget the candy plan. If your kids come home with a mountain of treats, the Switch Witch might be able to help.
Final Thoughts
Halloween doesn't have to mean knocking on doors to be magical. Whether you go big with a house party, keep it cozy with a movie night, or bring the whole street together, what kids remember most is the fun they had with the people around them.
Quick recap:
House party: snack table, activity stations, playlist, costume parade
Movie night: home theatre, mattresses on the floor, dollar store snacks
Block party: short outdoor stint, warm home base, glitter tattoos
